Today when the democratic legitimacy of the EU is questioned, there is a substantial need to cultivate a culture of democratic participation among youth, to inspire them to make their voices heard and change their future, to encourage active citizenship, social cohesion and a sense of belonging to the EU.
The Price of Freedom and Democracy aims to
* Contribute to youth’s understanding of the fundamental EU values
* Involve young people in the democratic life of their communities
* Promote their well-being and enhance their contribution to more peaceful and inclusive societies
* Develop a deeper understanding of the history and values of the EU
* Raise awareness on the contemporary democratic achievements
* Encourage youth civic participation through various NFIL methods and stimulate a European dialogue among youth on ways to preserve the democratic future of Europe
* Inspire youth to promote common European values and to contribute to the formation of more democratic societies across Europe with the active involvement of their citizens
Project Goals and Objectives
The Price of Freedom and Democracy aims to inform youth born after 1989 of the exploitation and manipulations of democratic practices of totalitarian regimes and the repressions on dissidents and the intellectual and artistic milieus, committed by the regimes in 6 EU Member States. PFD will involve 630 direct participants and more than 3000 indirect participants.
What are the events?
Remembrance Cinema and History Tours to contribute to a deeper understanding of history and stimulate reflections on contemporary civil liberties and an assessment of civil rights and their fragility.
Workshops on Forum Theatre to directly engage young EU citizens in re-enacting the past and in fostering actions to promote democracy and active citizenship.
Forum Theatre performances to recreate the past and to develop a sense of empathy and awareness to act for social change.
International exhibition -Youth in Action for Democracy to elicit the PFD’s messages to the wider public and the perceptions of youth on democracy.
The Kick-off Meeting
We held our kick-off meeting online through the Webex platform on 8 and 9 March 2021. The meeting was aimed at discussion and elaboration of key project documents, setting implementation strategies and distribution of responsibilities among the project partners.
Who are the project partners?
Foundation for Entrepreneurship, Culture and Education (FECE) is a NGO, founded in 2014, based in Sofia, Bulgaria. FECE’s mission is to promote, assist and support the development of culture, education, innovation and the entrepreneurial qualities of young people. FECE promotes freedom of cultural expression, encourages and organises creative initiatives in different fields of art, culture, media and education in an independent and creative nature. Our vision is to empower different communities and target audiences through arts, culture and education.
Kulturlabor Trial&Error e. V. is a Berlin-based NGO, a collective of youth workers, designers, artists and builders, craftivist and urban gardeners that work in the area of sustainability, creativity, community building, culture-led regeneration, participative citizenship, solidarity economies, media literacy and non-formal education. The team aims to share knowledge between different networks and individuals and provide information that encourages active citizenship.
Vilnius Institute for Policy Analysis (VIPA) was launched in 2016 as an assembly of experts from different fields of politics. VIPA’s experts are united by the idea of more freedom, transparency, democracy, culture, and openness in Lithuania. VIPA aims at increasing active civic participation in political processes, so that the state would not be overcome by bureaucracy, monopolies, nepotism, or political manipulation. VIPA is working towards raising resilience to disinformation, fake news, fostering society‘s capabilities to critically analyse information.
Post Bellum is a NGO whose main focus is the documentation of the memories of witnesses of the important historical phenomena of the 20th century. Post Bellum’s core project is the Memory of Nations archive, an international online collection of eyewitness accounts, which includes audio and video recordings, archive documents, photographs etc. Post Bellum’s main goal is to avoid forgetting the recent past of our nations. The team organises cultural events, publishes books, prepares exhibitions and has a series of witnesses’ stories in Czech Radio and Television.
Fundacja Inkubator Innowacji is a non-profit foundation located in Warsaw, Poland. The foundation works on the local and international level. The members of the organisation are young people and youth workers, united around the idea of promoting non-formal education and European awareness among young people and generally among the society, supporting the development of people, helping people with fewer opportunities in their social integration, supporting youth participation and strengthening the principles of civil society and democracy.
Center of Strategies for Youth Development (CSYD) is an organisation actively involved in project development and implementation in the local, national and international non formal education sphere, that directly aims at personal and professional youth development. CSYD’s vision is of a world in which formal education additionally soaks with the non-formal and informal education methods to contribute to the development and accountability processes of the youth.
